The Sun Has Risen Once Again

The Light's grasp weakens as it slips toward the horizon.
Streams of gold and yellow fade to dark orange and red.
Purple hues droop, and darkness looms, light's absence.

Distorted shadows grow, consuming all around.
Natural is extinguished, Artificial wakes as half the world sleeps.
The past reveals itself a million times, a constant stream of remembrance.

Nearest Neighbor is shy this time of the month.
He peeks, but the path remains dark ahead.
Confusion abounds. It doesn't seem to end.

Minutes stretch and blend into each other.
Hands move, but everything stays the same.
Movement is hidden, change hindered, frozen in icy time.

Suffocating staleness pervades space.
Anxious chemical reactions burst and pop.
The motherboard is threatened by an electrical overload.

Then the giant shadow becomes many.
Change is present once again.
Motion resumes.

The sun has risen once again.

Sometimes it just doesn't work out

I have about thirty pages left in the book, Born to Run, written by Christopher McDougall. It's the rather fascinating story of a man's search for the cure to running pain, which leads him to making some extraordinary friends and witnessing extreme athletes push human physical ability to its limits. It's the kind of book that makes you want to run ten miles a day.

I haven't gone for a run for the last two days and I've been itching to go. We haven't gotten much precipitation in Eagle Mountain, and suddenly this morning we got rain ... and more rain ... and a little more. It started raining last night around 1 a.m., and finally stopped this afternoon around 4:30. That's about 15 hours. Our neighbors basement even flooded a little. Below is a picture of my backyard.

Anyway, I was determined to go. It was still raining when I got some time, so I decided to run on the treadmill. That lasted for about three minutes until the track got messed up and folded up on itself. So I decided to brave the rain and run down a trail near my house.

I headed outside and made it about seven feet down the trail when I realized what 14 hours worth of rain will do to a dirt trail. So I flipped around. By now I was just frustrated. I ended up running twice around the block before I started to feel my lunch coming up. I guess I ate too much. So, I probably ran about a mile, total. So much for the ten I was planning on. ;-). Sometimes, it just doesn't work out how you want it to.

Introduction

I've now started at least seven blogs, each time with grand visions of writing witty, edgy, fresh entries full of pop culture and hilarious anecdotes and sentimental blather. And in all those attempts I think I might have gotten up to four blog posts before losing interest because no one read what I was writing and it really wasn't that good, anyway.

So this time, my focus will be to write for me. In fact, I'm quite certain that writing becomes much more enjoyable for me when I'm not wondering the whole time if my "audience" is going to like what I have to say.

Generally, I plan to write about books I'm reading or have read (and good movies I've seen); my experiences as I strive to transform myself from an overweight runner into just a runner; my photography which, admittedly, is in the infant stage--I got a new camera for Christmas and have taken a few pictures, but not much. I want to post my photography on here and talk about the stories that they tell; and I want to write about sports. Every time I think about what my dream job is, my mind eventually, inevitably, returns to sports. Of course, I reserve the right to stray from these topics as my interests and mood dictate.

My end goal is to hopefully learn a little more about myself--what drives me and what makes me happy. Because in the end, what I think I most want to be able to say is that I was happy, and that I made others happy.

So, to that end, I begin.
