Sometimes it just doesn't work out

I have about thirty pages left in the book, Born to Run, written by Christopher McDougall. It's the rather fascinating story of a man's search for the cure to running pain, which leads him to making some extraordinary friends and witnessing extreme athletes push human physical ability to its limits. It's the kind of book that makes you want to run ten miles a day.

I haven't gone for a run for the last two days and I've been itching to go. We haven't gotten much precipitation in Eagle Mountain, and suddenly this morning we got rain ... and more rain ... and a little more. It started raining last night around 1 a.m., and finally stopped this afternoon around 4:30. That's about 15 hours. Our neighbors basement even flooded a little. Below is a picture of my backyard.

Anyway, I was determined to go. It was still raining when I got some time, so I decided to run on the treadmill. That lasted for about three minutes until the track got messed up and folded up on itself. So I decided to brave the rain and run down a trail near my house.

I headed outside and made it about seven feet down the trail when I realized what 14 hours worth of rain will do to a dirt trail. So I flipped around. By now I was just frustrated. I ended up running twice around the block before I started to feel my lunch coming up. I guess I ate too much. So, I probably ran about a mile, total. So much for the ten I was planning on. ;-). Sometimes, it just doesn't work out how you want it to.
